Sad really but I've just discovered some shortcuts to the two formatting tools I use most often!
Cue Building Supplies post 
Cutting it short, turns out a pair of asterisks before and after text makes it bold, a couple of \ slashes before and after makes it italic 
Isn't finding new stuff BRILLIANT
